Hello! I'm back updating the blog. This time, i am going to discuss about how to teach part of speech, especially, Adjectives. Since today, the objective of the lesson that i teach today is about making poem (i want the students to be able to make a short poem), so the first thing to teach before i teach them about the structure of how to make a poem is teach them about the adjectives. Because they are going to use it later in order to make the poem.
So, the first thing i do is discuss about what "Part of speech" is to the students. I tell them that Part of speech is divided into three: V, N, and A. I purposely tell them only the initial of the word only to tap the students' knowledge about how far they know about Part of speech. After that, i ask them what is "V"?, What is "N"?, and what is "A". Mostly they have already known those words. I also ask them about the examples of each part of speech. If the students have already understand, i move to the next activity.
1st Activity: Find the Part of Speech!

The example of the worksheet |
So, first of all, i divide my students into three large groups: The Verb group, The Noun group, and The Adjective Group. I show them these words on the board, and i assist each group to find the part of speech where they belong to. The Verbs group must find ONLY the verbs, The Noun group must find the Nouns and the Adjectives group must find the adjectives word only. Each student, can only find one word and then take turn with their friends in his/her group until they find all of the words. Give them some times to finish the task, or you can make it as a competition who ever finish the task first will be the winner.
If your class condition is limited, than you can do it as individual/ pair task After they finish, ask them to write the answer on the board. You can download the worksheet here .
2nd Activity: Individual Bingo (The opposite bingo adjectives)
Previously, i have already posted about how to teach vocab by using BINGO activity. I also use the Bingo activity to teach adjectives but i modify the game a bit. Previously, i was the one who conduct the game. Now, I asked the student, individually, to do the game. As usual, i ask them to draw 3x3/4x4 grids on their paper. Next, i give them lists of adjectives on the board and ask the students to choose 9 or 16 adjectives to be put in their grids. They can choose any adjectives that they want. The goal is, every student MUST create three lines on their grid.
After they finish making the grid, i explain the rules to them. I will choose one student to start the game. He/she will choose one adjective in their grid that they want to cross, BUT, that he/she must mention the opposite of the word that they want to cross.
For example, The first student wants to cross the word: "CLEAN". So, he/she must tell the class: "THE OPPOSITE OF DIRTY", and the whole class will cross the word "CLEAN" if they have it in their grid. Then, the next student wants to cross the word: "SHORT", so he/she must shout: "THE OPPOSITE OF TALL", and then the whole class will cross the word: "SHORT" if they have it in their grid. It continues until all of the students get a chance to shout out the opposite of the word that they want to cross.
If there are some students who do not have the words mentioned by their friends, so they cannot cross/add that word into their grid. They have to wait, until there is someone who shout out the opposite of the word that they have.
As usual, i usually find the last 5 students who are late to make lines and give them a light punishment (like making sentences or so). But of course you can modify it.
3rd Activity: Adjectives Domino
This is a fun activity that i have tried in my class and my students quite like it. First of all, i prepare several flashcards contain of Adjectives and Nouns. After that, i divide the class into two large groups. One of the groups get the Nouns and the other one gets the adjectives. I start the game by sticking one of the words (It can be Noun or Adjective. For example, the first word is: Early. It is an adjective, so that the noun group can start first. They have to discuss with their group and choose one noun which match with the Adjective: EARLY (for example: EARLY-TRAIN). After the Noun group has finished, the adjective group must continue the task. They have to discuss and find the adjective which match with the Noun: TRAIN (for example: EARLY-TRAIN-FAST) and continue take turn to stick the word on the board. The group who can finish all of the flashcards will be the winner.
Alternative:
- Divide the students into two large groups. Labeled them as the Noun group and the Adjective group.
- Give some time for each group to list 20 Nouns/Adjectives on a piece of paper. The Noun group must list 20 Nouns, and the adjective groups must list 20 adjectives.
- Teacher starts the game by writing a Noun/an adjective (choose one only) on the board. If Teacher writes an adjective, it means the Noun group will continue afterwards. If Teacher starts with a noun, it means, the adjective group will start afterwards.
- reminds all the students that they MUST take turns (one by one) write the word on the board. Tell students to cross the word on their paper if they have used it on the board. The group who cross all the words first will be the winner.
So, those are the activities that i used for my teaching today. If there are questions related to the activity, you can ask it at the comment box. I'll try my best to answer it!. Hopefully, it will be useful!.
